Using this site.

Continuum is being built in public. This page covers the website and the preview as they exist today. It is short because there is not much here yet.

What this is

This site describes Continuum and lets you use four things: an intake tool that builds and encrypts a file entirely in your browser; a product preview that uses a fictional person and no real data; your own file, which is encrypted with a passphrase only you know and stored in this browser on this device; and the composer, which can seal part of that file and give you a link to share it.

There are still no accounts, and your file is never uploaded. Some of what you do here does outlast the tab, though, and you should know about all of it.

• The file you build in the intake tool is downloaded to your device, and it stays there until you delete it. That is the point of it. If you use the “without encryption” option, that file is plain readable text and anyone who opens it can read it — the tool says so at the moment you choose.
• Your file in the app stays in this browser after you close the tab, encrypted with your passphrase. That is what makes it yours to come back to. Clearing this browser's site data deletes it, and we cannot restore it.
• A share link stores something on our server. When you create one, the encrypted bytes of that one view are held so the person you sent it to can fetch them, until it expires or you end it. You choose how long when you make the link; the choices offered today are one hour, one day and thirty days. Alongside those bytes we hold the label you typed, the kind of view it is, and the access code if you set one, in the clear. The key that decrypts the view is in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to a server, so we cannot read what we are holding. Ending the share deletes it.
• The composer keeps a list of the shares you have made, in this browser, with the token that ends each one. That token is the only thing that can end a share: we cannot end it for you, because we have no account to prove it was yours. If you clear this browser's site data, the link you already sent keeps working until the time you chose runs out.

The preview is the one surface that keeps nothing at all: it uses a fictional person, stores nothing, and sends nothing.

The file is yours, and so is the passphrase

Anything you create with the intake tool belongs to you. It is encrypted with a passphrase only you know, which is never sent to us and never written into the file. That means we cannot recover it. If you lose the passphrase, the file cannot be opened by anyone, including us. Keep it somewhere safe.

Please do not put anything into the tool that would seriously harm you if the file were lost, since there is no backup and no recovery.

The preview is fiction

The person, records and grants shown in the preview are invented for demonstration. Nothing there describes a real individual, and the interface shows how the product is designed to work rather than a service you can rely on today.

What we do not promise

This site is provided as it is. We do not warrant that it will be available without interruption or free of defects, and to the extent the law allows we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from using it. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice, and no part of this site should be used to make a clinical decision.

Fair use

Do not attempt to break, overload or misuse this site, and do not use it to store or transmit anything unlawful. If you find a security issue, please tell us rather than exploiting it. Details are on the security page.

Changes

These terms will change as the product grows. That has already happened once: the composer began storing encrypted views on our server before this page said so, and this section used to promise the terms would be updated first. They were not. They are now, and the correction is described above rather than quietly folded in.

What is still ahead is accounts, a server that holds your whole file, and sync between devices. None of those exists today. We will describe each one here before it ships, and the date at the top will say when. If we get that order wrong again, the page will say that too.
